EIC Accelerator: technology readiness levels (TRL)

Where a topic description refers to a TRL, the following definitions apply, unless otherwise specified:

Grant covers TRL6 to TRL8

In the EIC Accelerator funding scheme, the grant can cover only activities from TRL6 to TRL8.

In other words, the grant portion will not cover any activities related to the activities in preparation for the innovation to be ready for full-scale operations as well as commercialisation activities.

Adequate TRL description

In your ESR (Evaluation Summary Report) of which you have an example above, you will find now a section on TRLs: if you applied for grant only and all WPs are marked with "No" it means the evaluators found that all activities described are within the TRL6 to TRL8 range and thus no suggestion for blended finance will be given.

If you are applying for grant only, and should the evaluation of your proposal conclude that you are requesting grant also for activities above Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8 in your proposal, the European Commission can provide the requested amount of funding for said activities in the form of blended finance, provided that you give your consent (that is ticked the box in PArt A of the proposal in the Funding & Tenders Portal) in the dedicated call specific question:

request for blended finance-1

You have ticked "YES" giving your consent You have ticked "NO" refusing your consent
Applicants of proposals selected to be funded will receive a blended finance offer. The grant part will be the requested amount in the proposal, reduced by the budget of the Work Package(s) containing activities above TRL 8. The equity part will include the sum of the budget for the Work Package(s) containing activities above TRL8. Please note that if the amount for equity is not sufficient to warrant a due diligence procedure, the jury may propose to reduce the grant element in the amount of the activities above TRL8. The jury also has flexibility in duly justified cases to propose an amount of equity even if not requested at the time of submission, should it considers necessary for the successful implementation of the project.

Applicants will NOT be considered for blended finance.

IMPORTANT: If applicants cannot demonstrate that they have the ability to secure resources for the activities above TRL 8, the proposal will be rejected.

If such an ability is properly demonstrated, you can receive the grant requested reduced by the budget of the Work Package(s) containing activities above TRL 8.

Acceptance of counter-proposal: When the jury makes a counter offer, it is understood that the applicant will be expected to accept the offer and if they refuse, the grant element will also be rejected. NA

IMPORTANT: even for a grant-only proposal, TRL9 and deployment activities have also to be detailed although not covered by the grant, as a demonstration of the intention and ability of the beneficiary to deploy to market, and of the expected impact of the proposal.

TRL9 Activities can be covered by the equity only: these activities including  marketing, full scale operation, market entry, commercialisation activities.
